Hip hop bass lines came alive with a tight bottom end that didn’t fuzz out when the drivers were pushed, and the bludgeoning math metal of Meshuggah retained its punch and clarity. In stereo mode, the ROG Theta 7.1 proved itself an apt platform for music, with excellent frequency separation allowing for clear note definition regardless of genre. This was true whether virtual 7.1 surround sound was on or not. At 100% volume, the Theta 7.1 seemed noticeably quieter than other headsets I’ve spent considerable time with, including the Steelseries Arctis 1. The ROG Theta 7.1’s eight neodymium magnet drivers, branded Asus Essence, offer remarkable audio clarity and frequency definition, but they could stand to be a little louder. These controls sit comfortably just above the mic input of the back of the left earcup. The left earcup features a solid rocker switch for adjusting volume that doubles as a mic on/off toggle when pressed in, as well as a toggle for stereo versus the headset’s virtual 7.1 surround sound. The ROG Theta 7.1’s controls are simple and easily accessible. I wish I could somehow get these cables out of my way so they didn’t regularly rest just below my Adam's apple. Unfortunately, the cables meet just below the neck in a way that frequently caused them to make contact with my throat. This is necessary to power the drivers, as there are four per earcup. One cable comes out of each earcup and into the DAC, which runs to the USB-C cable. We've had our time with the Nokia 7.1 so let's dive in and see how it handles. If there is one negative note to add regarding the Theta 7.1’s comfort, it’s the bulky cabling. It's not a lot of power to drive along the near 6-inch display and it's also only 60mAh larger than the battery on the Nokia 7. The only area where the Nokia 7.1 seems to lack innovation is the modest 3,060mAh battery. On the front, there's an 8MP snapper with a wide angle view that promises sharper selfies than the 5MP of old. The rear main camera is better equipped for low light while the second 5MP sensor adds portrait mode shots to the experience. The new cameras are probably the biggest improvement on the Nokia 7.1. Not everyone will be thrilled about the new notch, but the tall-aspect display means the Nokia 7.1 has smaller bezels on all sides (significantly less on the top and bottom), more real estate and resolution and all of this in a phone that's slightly taller but not wider. Nokia has made enough of a difference to the innards to make the Nokia 7.1 a worthy successor to the 7, but it has also improved much about the outside of the phone.

The Nokia 7.1 may have a dual camera and a tall-aspect screen like the Nokia 7 Plus, but otherwise, the new phone is a thorough update of its predecessor. You might say that the Nokia 7.1 is a successor to the Nokia 7 with a pinch of the 7 Plus' build quality and features added to bolster the entire package, and you won't be far from the truth.
